Essex Forever – Community Love

Essex article - More Wine

You can take the boy out of Essex, but not Essex out of the boy.

I was never quite the full furry dice, Ford Capri boy racer but there remain some fairly scary curtain haircut photos out there, circa 1989. Plus of course there was the frequenting of the sadly closed L’Aristos night club.  No Trainers, No Denims and definitely no aristocrats, or class for that matter.  Snow washed denim, was that an Essex thing?

My mum recently moved out of the suburban bungalow of my childhood memories in the leafy suburb of Lexden. Not into a care home, thankfully, nor any form of sheltered accommodation.  Instead a compact 2 bed in a redeveloped building just off the High St offering step free access to a very 70s M&S Foodhall and bus stops plus a free town centre car park spot for the rest of the family.  What more does an octogenarian need?

There was a definite hiatus between youthful avoidance of the High St ‘Squaddie’ hangouts and the current occasional bed for the night just a few metres from the sometimes unsavoury antics late night Colchester continues to offer.  The High St has of course morphed and evolved.  There exist small independent businesses, amid plenty of chains, charity shops and the splendid Turkish barbers.  By far and away the biggest challenge though has been to see the growing number of homeless on this High Street which has been home of sorts for all my years.

More Wine recently made a financial donation to Colchester Food Bank (https://colchester.foodbank.org.uk/), reflecting the sales of our Community Love Wine Boxes during this last month of  the current ‘lockdown’.   We admire and thank them for their work, not least with ever more difficult times presumably ahead.    This takes the More Wine contribution to our communities in Frome (current home), Bristol (previous home and nearest city) and Colchester (our forever home) to over £500 in the last quarter.

In such challenging, unprecedented and now confrontational times it feels right to put something back into our varied local communities. Many thanks for all who have supported us over the last few months enabling us to make these donations.

Our More Wine Community love and Family love wine boxes remain on sale.  As long as we keep selling these, we will keep donating a £1 per box to a community-based cause. #CommunityLove #FamilyLove

So far in 2020, we have made financial and sometimes liquid donations to:

https://bristolfoodunion.org/

https://colchester.foodbank.org.uk/

Stay safe, look after one another and thank you for your continuing thirst for natural, organic, low-intervention wine in bag in box, pouch and can.

As a gesture to you, please use MoreWine5 for a token ‘glass’ on us*.
