2.25ltr Bag in Box – Falanghina IGT

ABV 13%

An Italian classic, THE house wine of Naples and the South. Fruity, refreshing, lots of green apple and zesty citrus. Orange blossom and acacia on the nose. Fab choice from a real wine lover!

Waitrose continues in its eco wine mission with this collaborative effort from When in Rome, an Anglo-Italian wine brand, and Philip Schofield (wine lover, writer for Waitrose Weekend, the shop’s ins-store weekly newspaper, and environmentally aware consumer, apparently). This white is made with a recyclable inner, which holds classic southern Italian falanghina chosen by Philip from an independent Campanian vineyard. It has upfront floral notes on the nose which translate into a crisp, citrussy white with subtle green apple and a slight minerality that will go with almost everything. Stash this in the fridge and drink at your leisure with anything from pizza to cured meats, cheese and white fish. Good work, Phil.

Unexpectedly, I also fell for Philip Schofield Benevento Falanghina IGT. I say ‘unexpectedly’ because the idea of drinking wine with a celebrity name emblazoned across it is loathsome to me (this is not wine snobbery; I feel the same about most celebrity-endorsed products). This white is different. Made in collaboration with the brilliant When In Rome people, it is clean and refreshing, with a back-glow of orange juice and zest, and little teases of clementine, mandarin and neroli.

Antica Hirpinia sits just outside Taurasi, which famously boomed as a wine making centre after the opening of the ‘wine railway’ from Avellino to Roccheta Sant’Antonio in 1895.  The real story of Antica Hirpinia began in 1959 with the creation of the province’s first cooperative winery.  Today, led by a group of friends who took over it in 2016.  Antica Hirpinia aim to produce wines that communicate the passion and intensity of their land – as proudly Campanian as they are!
